An architect has transformed a historic house built at the turn of the 20th century into a modern mansion, which is best described as a luxury adult playground.

Redesigned by architect Luigi Roselli, the Federation five-bedroom – an ornate style popular in the early 1900s – sits on an enormous 3,117 square metre block in Lindfield, 13 kilometres north of the Sydney CBD.

Inside are marble floors, state-of-the-art French fireplaces and the standout fixture: a giant slippery dip that runs parallel to the stairs from the landing to the hallway.

A swimming pool, poolside gym and entertainment patio with a barbecue and woodfire pizza oven are spread across the landscaped garden, along with a large vegetable patch in a nod to the sustainable focus at the heart of the house.

Some original features have been retained, with intricately corniced ceilings and whitewashed archways in the old front of the house providing contrast against contemporary additions like underfloor heating and floor-to-ceiling windows in the back.

The renovated rear is flooded with natural light, with the kitchen, living area and butler’s pantry all opening out onto the garden.

Downstairs houses a library, home office and wine cellar, along with two of the five bedrooms including the master which has an ensuite and spacious walk-in wardrobe.

The remaining bedrooms are upstairs, beside a children’s playroom, study and two main bathrooms fitted with gold showerheads and double ‘his and hers’ sinks.

Outside, there’s two lock-up parking garages with space for four cars and a detached guest suite, which comes with council approval for use as self-contained guest accommodation.

A retractable roof can be lifted and lowered over the barbecue deck, perfect for entertaining at any time of year.

It’s hard to believe such a spacious masterpiece lies behind the unassuming red brick façade skirted by a whitewashed verandah.

The house has been listed with an asking price of $12million (AUD) with offers through McGrath realtor, Glenn Curran.
